The open-office floor plan is a popular workplace collaboration technique. However, the noisy environment can be too much for some people to handle and destroy their focus.

For some people, listening to music at work may be the best alternative to drown out the chatter. Personally, I am not a fan of open-offices. I usually resort to listening to music or using a conference room to block out the noise.

Why? Because, "listening to music at work increases productivity, enhances efficiency, sparks creativity, and improves your mood."

Listening to preferred music can increase focus by triggering the parts of the brain that control emotions. Listening to music that evokes positive feelings could lead to greater levels of productivity. 

While there are many theories as to what types of music is best for maintaining focus, there is not one genre that tops them all - so don't limit yourself to just nature sounds and classical music!

In a recent experiment, it was concluded that Queen’s “We Will Rock You,” 2 Unlimited’s “Get Ready for This,” and 50 Cent’s “In Da Club” were some of the most influential songs for "empowering" listeners, and those who listened to the high-power playlist volunteered to go first almost twice as often as those who listened to a less powerful playlist.
